Piazza di Spagna is located at the foot of Pincio hill connected through the famous Trinità dei Monti steps, terminating with its same church.
The irregular shape of the square is also because in its history there has never been studied a specific job on the square but rather has always favored the church on top of the staircase, which ended only in 1587 by Pope Sisto V nearly a century after the debates and diatribes which had accompanied the slow work.

Its history is very strange: when the famous steps were terminated in 1725, while Piazza di Spagna was brought to new life and the church of Trinità dei Monti was finished, the builders discovered they had no more funds to connect the 2 masterpieces and from the square a grassy slope and a dirt road was conducting the visitors to the church at the top of the Pincio. This situation was solved only after Stefano Gueffier's death. It was him putting to silence the diatribes by leaving in heritage a big sum of money in order to let the architect Francesco de Sanctis to design and finish the famous steps.

Pietro Bernini's masterpiece, Gianlorenzo Bernini's father, is so called because it represents a sinking boat... this unique choice was taken because at that time the water system inherited by the Romans in that area did not allow a sufficient income of water to design a fountain with jets of water and therefore this was the only solution.
