Roman Castles, the gates of Rome

Posted on 15 March 2010

Just a few Km from Rome, there are some villages on the hills dominating the city on the south. These are small villages famous for the lakes, nature and gastronomy absolutely not to be underestimated.

At a few Km from Rome, on the so-called “Castelli romani” arise some characteristic and nice places between 2 lakes, Albano and Nemi, on the hills in the south of Rome. These places are very well-known for their food and it’s worth spend some time to visit them.

The first place you’ll meet, coming from Rome is Castel Ganfoldo, nice village facing Albano Lake and specially famous as the Pope’s summer residence. Very characteristic are Genzano and Albano, the second one is known for its bridge connecting Albano to Ariccia. This last is famous for its “fraschette” (small kiosk where you can eat the “porchetta” – pork meat). Continuing further, in direction Nemi Lake, you can meet Nemi, famous for its wild strawberries which are a true delicacy!

Dominating all these villages, at 750 mts above the sea level, there is Rocca di Papa, where you might see a suggestive panorama view of the valley and of Rome. Last, but not least, you can visit Frascati, famous all over the world for its wine which you can taste in the many bars arising in its small roads where we suggest you to have a walk.

So, after visiting in all directions Rome’s monuments, we suggest you a quiet and natural walk between these villages to taste good food, wine and to see Rome from a very different angle!
